Gov. Brian Schweitzer got it right here at least. I know earlier he was considering accepting the deal but the pressure must have been too great. Believe me, I don't think a court case is the best thing but what else is there to do?
Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing. John D. Rockefeller

Destruction
It looks like the Montana House wants to allow all the usable ground water in South Eastern Montana to be pumped out of the ground to be gone forever. I really hate to tell these people but ponds and reservoirs go dry over time and then the ground water is needed to water the cattle. If we have pumped the water all out for short term profits, there will be no more water so you can run cattle.
Also, I have another question. If this bill exempts CBM water from water quality standards, what happens with the State of Montana's lawsuit that Wyoming is contaminating our streams with CBM water? If it's exempt from Montana water quality standard, we have just given the Wyoming CBM industry a present of untold value.
Hopefully the Senate kills this poorly thought out bill. Ranchers who care about the long term in the cattle business realize how short sighted it is to dewater the aquifers we need for our survival in this dry country.
We have to preserve it and use it sustainably. And the short-term use of resources at the destruction of the long-term heritage of this country is not a policy that we can pursue. Bruce Babbitt

Good Letter
Letter: Regulations needed for methane industry
You want to see some of the problems with coal bed methane (CBM), this letter to the editor gives you a first hand glimpse into them. It's a very good letter and those who want unfettered CBM development need to sit up and take notice. What really caught my eye was the losing of the 3 artesian wells. This is what scares me most about CBM. I don't have any artesian wells but I rely almost exclusively on wells to water my cattle. My wells start going dry, how am I going to water my cattle?
Well water in South Eastern Montana is a vital and scarce commodity. Pumping it out of the ground and dumping it on the ground will deprive us of this very necessary and scarce commodity. Pretty scary if you ask me.
Everything is scary if you look at it. So you just got to live. Mary J. Blige
I am proud to live in a state where there are a few individuals who stand up for what is right in spite of attempted interference from the governor's office.
The hay meadows, the most productive part of our ranch, are on Spotted Horse Creek, an ephemeral drainage.
I am sorry to say that our experiences with the coalbed methane industry have not been happy ones.
