Has To Get Better

Without getting into to many details, 2008 has to get better. Five flat tires in five days feeding taxes anybodies sanity.

Then I have had a small out break of coccidiosis in my calves for some reason. Usually there has to be a stressor for this to happen and I have no idea what that could have been. Most of them have been getting over it but I have had to doctor some and a couple of potty calves have died. Yesterday I got the whole bunch in and doctored about 20 head that had a loose stool trying to get a handle on the situation. It's not a life or death thing right now but it definitely is irritating.

It just makes it feel like 2008 is starting on the wrong foot here. I know it's not but damn, it's irritating.

Hope you have a better year than this. Have you ever used sulvet in the water. That's what we do here if there's just one calf sick, it seems to prevent the rest from getting it. We use electolytes in the water at the same time both in the waterers and the trough.

I visited with my vet about the situation. He didn't think we needed to spend all the money it would take to doctor the water with something. Just doctor the ones that appear sick would be more cost effective unless the situation got worse so that's the way I went. I'll see how it works out.

Sam-- You got a lot of wild birds hanging around your feeders or calf lot? The year I got coccidiosis in my replacement heifers was the year I had several hundred pheasants/grouse in my lot- and thats what my vet said was bringing it in....
I kind of solved that problem now by just turning the heifers out and letting them grow up quick and run with the cows....

I don't run my replacements in a lot. They are in a >1000 acre pasture. Nothing worse health wise than to put cattle that are destined to be pasture cattle in a lot. Birds? What birds. They migrate to the low country for the winter.

That's what I meant by they aren't under stress. I can't figure out what started it. interestingly enough, I just found out the guy who bought my calves had an outbreak in them too. Third year he bought them, first time he has had any health trouble. Go figure.
