Question

I have been approached by a commercial entity about using some of my photographs on some of there web pages. Does anybody out there know how this works? The individual said my pictures are of value so I need to get the value out of them if he uses them but he is not sure how to structure the deal either. This is a new deal for him too. I know I would prefer some kind of use deal instead of selling them but I don't know how it's done. I thought I would ask the question here in case anybody knows something about it.

It's "stock photography", selling images by the use. Yes, I like your photographs as well. Many are excellent and of a unique subject.

IMO, I'd get a book on shooting stock photography. Putting "stock photography" into Amazon brings up a number of such books. I've seen some in Barnes & Noble. Some individuals make a considerable amount of money from their digital images through this process.

StockPhotoTalk is a blog on stock photography; googling "stock photography blog" will bring up others.

You could contact my friend Jon Sullivan about it. He runs PDPhoto, a site chock full of his photos, many of which he's made available for far use under the Creative Commons licensing. His contact information, in his own words:

I've sold some photos and it depended on whether they were used in papers, magazines or for web use and advertising.

Get a business agent to represent your interest. Make him get out there and help you brand cattle, mend fences, to get your business
