I thought about talking about how upset I was that the consumers of Montana are getting screwed over but decided it just isn't worth it. I've said my piece many times and nobody cares but me. So onto what I can control, until the politicians of both stripes take more of our freedoms away, things around the ranch.
Finished kicking the cows out into the hills. I had been watching one calf that was getting along sucking hind teat but knew he was a bum so now he is home with the rest of the bums now. Five total bums for no apparent reason, how horrible. I don't know what the situation was that their moms left them but they won't get a chance again. Next Wednesday we will sell everything that doesn't have a calf on it or is going to calve late. That will teach them cows to leave their calves or get bred late.
Busy getting other spring work done working at getting ready for brandings. Like I said, things I can control, kind of. See ya later.

UPDATE: Turns out we are back down to 4 bum calves. Found a cow that had just lost a calf yesterday so we are in the process of grafting one of the bums on the cow. The cow loves the idea but the calf is not to sure. We'll see how it turns out.

Great year to be culling your herd, for sure!
We're trying to contract calves for the fall now too.
I don't try to contract the calves until July or so unless a really spectacular offer comes in sooner. Last year the guy met what i considered to be an unreachable price in May so we done the deal. By fall I could have got a little more but I was damn happy where we sold them.
It seems like a good market to sell culls. Yesterday the boss was down with a knee issue so he had RFD TV on and watched several hours of the Superior video auction. Prices were good on feeder cattle.
I think it is tomorrow they will sell long horn breeding stock. They showed previews. They sell one by one or sometimes a cow with calf at side. I hope I remember to watch for at least a few minutes to see what they bring. Some of the horns are impressive! Everyone a different color combo. Interesting.
We will brand a small bunch, around 120, as soon as we are ready. Thyen we will do the big bunch, >400, sometime in the middle of May. The neighbors all come over and help on the big bunch. It is a fun gathering for all. In fact a guy that worked for a neighbor wants us to let him know when we brand so he can come visit.

and see the pictures that show you the brand. It is a bar over a lazy w.
As for branding pictures I am always so busy that I don't get a chance to take pictures. Maybe my Darling Wife will get a few once she gets there.
