I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting to see a calf on the cows and finally this morning I saw one. Actually there were two new baby calves on the cows. They are supposed to start on the 10th of March but usually there is a calf or two on the ground before February is over.
The cows are probably going to be like the heifers. They got a really slow start this year. I must have missed their cycle when I turned the bulls out last summer which explains the slow start. I keep telling the hired man the phase of the moon was wrong for breeding when we turned the bulls out. Whatever if is I am glad to start seeing calves on the cows.
One of them really funny things, I complain about the weather being too nice but for calving it couldn't be better. As dry as it's looking I would rather see some tough weather, as long as moistures involved, and a harder calving to what we have. I can't order the type of weather I want though so I guess we deal.
Finally my innocence begins to weigh me down. Jean Racine

I hope your calving season goes well. We're almost done - we calve out in February and March. We have a herd of approximately 120 head - we've had about 85 cows calve so far. We've had very few losses (only two), and very few health problems - like you, we've been having very mild weather, so only a couple of cases of scours and the odd navel infection. Looking forward to the 3:15 am checks being over - an uninterrupted nights sleep will be nice.
Sleep, I can hear it calling.
