Just like the infamous Valentines Day, today is another made up holiday that I have no use for. This one was not made by the greeting card companies though, it was made up by the Government to give their employees a paid day off. I don't see that they need it but on the up side they aren't working so they aren't bothering me so I guess it might be worth it.
What I always love is when you give a Government employee a bad time about their made up holidays which gives them days off they say, "I work hard and DESERVE the day off." Yes they actually say deserve like I emphasized it while looking down their nose at you like you are some inferior being. This leads to a question. For those of us who work on these days off are they impling that;
a. we don't work hard or,
b. we don't "DESERVE" the day off since we are too far beneath them to understand such a comment?
I wish somebody could explain it to me once I am back in from working today. I would really like to know why I don't deserve a day off.
A perpetual holiday is a good working definition of hell. George Bernard Shaw

To really get back to the meaning it would have to be changed back to celebrating Washington and Lincoln's birthdays on their actual dates. Not just some convenient Monday.
I am following the discussion on cutting the "farm bill" with interest. I have no particular objection to cuts BUT for every $ they take from a producer, they should take 2$ from the administration of the programs. The FSA office in this small town is huge. There is not one more acre under cultivation now (in fact less because of the urban sprawl, etc.) than there was when one "professional" and one secretary handled the whole mess.
Growing up I always appreciated that George Washington's birthday gave me the day after my birthday off from school. Plus we had Lincoln's birthday, too!
This was way before mid-winter vacations, teacher's conferences, etc... Yes, I agree with you, SDW. They combined the 2 for a 3 day weekend. Like weekends mean much to us farmers & ranchers anyhow
The last time I was a union employee - my union voted to give up two vacation days to have Martin Luther King Day off. Doesn't that make a heck of a lot of sense?
Don't get me started...
