The best I could find was three theories about Valentines day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine." Another thought is that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine.

The other theory is that Valentine's Day celebration date back to the ancient times when the 'Feast of Lupercal' was celebrated in the honor of the Roman God of Fertility. This day falls on the 15th of February every year. According to a time worn custom, on the eve of Lupercalia (14th of Feb) a ritual of 'name drawing' was followed, during which a young man drew the name of a girl from the lot, who was to be his sweetheart for the whole year. Since then, this day (14th of Feb) has been considered as the day of Cupid, the mischievous son of Venus -the Roman Goddess of Love.

So which is it? Only the greeting card companies know.

Then there's the traditional gifts us men are supposed to give our sweethearts on this day that I see as really dumb. First is the flowers. So lets give our sweetheart dead plants to show her how much we love her. Dead plants. This really makes a lot of sense. It's like saying, "My love for you is like these pretty weeds, dead." It seems to me like you would score a lot of points this way.





Next traditional gift is the box of chocolate. Here is another brilliant idea. Give your sweetheart a box of chocolate which says to her, "I know you are watching your weight/dieting and to show you my support I will give you candy so you can get fat." This really sounds like a brilliant idea to give your sweetheart.





The newest traditional gift to give your sweetheart is sexy lingerie. Now lets get serious. Does a man give a women lingerie because she wants it or because he wants to see her in it. I know the answer to that and so should you. This gift just sounds narcissistic to me and its not a gift for her.

You are supposed to be spectacularly romantic on this day or your a cad. That's the message in our society today. Well I found this interesting.

The main reason Valentine's Day breakups are so frequent, culture watchers agree, is that the much-hyped holiday creates so much pressure and so many expectations. The ubiquitous ads for long-stemmed roses, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, and flowery cards prompt many to think of all the reasons they don't want to remain half of a couple.

Exactly what I have been saying. There is so much pressure to do something incredibly romantic on this day that the pressure makes men rebel. This is a real bad side effect of this "made up holiday."

Truthfully, I have nothing to give My Darling Wife this Valentines day but my love. That seems to be what this day is about, is telling you sweetheart that you love her. So why do I need a special day to tell my Darling Wife that I love her? I don't feel that I do. Everyday I tell her that I love her, and it's not just perfunctory, I mean it. She is the most important women in my life and there is no one/way to replace her in my heart. I am not the most romantic person in the world but she should know this of me by now. I am always supporting her in what she does and encourage her to stretch the boundaries of who she is so she can experience more things. I do these things because I love her and want her to be all she can be. Why do I need a special day to tell her these things? I hope she knows it from our lives together.

I guess I might just try the Love Doc's advice. She thinks the best gift you can give your Valentine is a kiss. Not just a little peck on the lips, but a full contact kiss that gets all your attention. I have to admit I probable don't do this one enough so I will have to give it a try.
