Only me. I contacted the Navy for some records that I don't have and they informed me I don't exist in thier records. So what did I do for 6 years, imagine I was in the Navy? The IRS sure knows I exist so whats the deal?
Reasearching what I need to do, I have found out that I have to supply the Navy with a certified and notarized copy of my DD214 to prove to them I was in and then they will try to find me. Wonderful. I do have a question that I can't find an answer to that maybe somebody can help me with. What is a certified and notarized copy? I have never heard of such a beast. I know what notarized is, but certified and notarized, that is confusing. Only the government.
When all else is lost, the future still remains. Christian Nestell Bovee

a litigation when one seeks "certified copies" of documents, what they get is a
certifitification (i.e. a written statement) from the "custodian of the records"
attensting that the records are a "true and correct" copy of the original. In
your case, I would recommend that you bring your DD 214 to a Notary along with
Identification, have the Notary make a photocopy (or bring one with you) and have
the Notary execute a document that says something like: "On XYZ date, Sarpy Sam
appeared before me with the original of his form DD 214. I hereby certify that
this document is a true and correct copy of said form."
The point of the rather tedious exercise is to show that YOU showed up with the
original and some state-recognized authority (i.e. the Notary) has compared the
original to the copy and certified that the copy is accurate.
I can't guarantee that it will work, but it should.
If all else fails, see if there's a VA/veteran support group in your area, and they might be able to help. Here in Billings, there's Vet Support Center on Avenue C.
All you need to do is stop by Rehberg's office and have then request a copy of your record be delivered to you. The VA and the DOD records office will slip any request from you to the bottom of the priority pile and if you do get it, it will be a looong time. If they get the request on a Congressman’s stationary for some odd reason they seem to get off their patoots and will actually hunt it down for you.
I requested a copy of mine THREE times before I went to Marlenee's office and I had a letter within ten days they had found it and my copy arrived in the mail after four weeks. Don't waste your time, have Rehberg's people request it for you. After all that's one of the things we pay him to do!
Keep us updated on this saga!
Kim, so far everything I done is online but now they need this stuff.
DMerriman, I kind of agree and i am going to try just the notarized route to start with. I have been in contact with the Billings VA center before and they were unwilling to do anything for me since i didn't serve in a recognized war. Go figure.
Randy, I'll take your suggestion to heart. I'll give the regular route a try first and then step up to our Congressmen if it proves necessary.
See first comment. The following language constitutes the
"certification": "On XYZ date, Sarpy Sam
appeared before me with the original of his form DD 214.
I hereby certify that
this document is a true and correct copy of said form.”
