Thomas said she approached the student and tried to detain him, but he became aggressive, pushed her, then reached under his shirt.
"She thought he was reaching for a weapon. She drew and fired one time, striking him in the foot," Sgt. Paul Accardo said.
I wasn't there or involved so I can't say if drawing the gun was necessary but it appears to be appaling marksmanship to hit him in the foot after drawing your weapon. It turns out to be a good deal she was such a bad shot but really makes me wonder about the competence of security guards.

high school and one in the middle school. They are regular police officers in uniform,
and under the command of our police chief. They are working out well. We have never had
a tremendous problem with weapons in the school, but we have had drugs, and the occasional
fight in the halls. The officers have bridged a gap with the kids, and developing positive relationships between the teens - which is definitely worth something in a world where police are seen as the
bad guys. Funding has been a joint venture with the schools and the city, and the use
of grant money. Much better than security guards.

Bottom line, though, is that anyone that carries a firearm <strong>really</strong> needs to stay proficient with it. Sounds like this woman didn't bother.
