The Swamp

I have a new song. It is sung to the Beatles tune "Yellow Submarine."

We all live in the Okie Fenokie Swamp,

Where life is so muddy.


By the way, what cartoon character lived in the Okie Fenokie Swamp?

Thanks to Joe G. For reminding me that Pogo the Possum was the character I was thinking about. I was looking on the Internet and found this pic. I can remember having one of these cups when I was younger. What a sad day it was when the handle fell off and it cracked.

It was Pogo who inhabited the Okefenokee with Albert the Alligator, the bear who spoke in fancy fonts (he was a promoter) and a host of other characters. Every four years since 1960 my first campaign statement has been "I go Pogo." (He ran for President several times until Walt Kelly gave up the strip. I don't remember if he ran in Montana papers or not.)

I still remember the series of Pogo strips where they were following the footprints of strangers - until they finally found out they'd been tracking themselves. Pogo's statement "We have met the enemy, and he is us" seems so appropriate this election year :-(
