Disgust

Yesterday was one of those days. I was disgusted most of the day. The thing that really set it off was the Hired Hand quit. Not that he was that great of guy but with calving going on he was better than nothing. He is going to stay up till the first but would like to leave sooner. It usually takes months to find someone. Now with calving going on I need to find someone in less than 3 weeks to help me feed cows and calve things out. I'm disgusted.

Typical. I suppose the "musical hired man" dance will begin around here soon. You feed them all winter when you could really manage without and as soon as it is time to work, they leave.

Guess I am lucky in not having to have a hired man on our ranch.

With an attitude like bonnie has, I'll bet she's a peach to work for!

I understand how you feel, but come one. Ever worked for anyone you weren't related too bonnie?

I read Bonnie's comment and completely agreed. We are finally getting busy and he is up and leaving. Happens every time.

Oh, and yes, I have worked for people I am not related to.

Yes, sir, I have. A very large corporation, in fact, and got along fine. Oh, and I worked part time as a "parts person" in a machinery dealership for awhile. Of course that was when the closest dealership was not 90 miles away.

We no longer hire any ourside help in our operation but within the month, we will witness the "musical chairs" in the nieghborhood as the guys move from one farm to another. It happens every year. Sorry if it seems like I have a bad attitude but I was just remarking on what I observe.

My concern was to your remark about "feeding them all winter" as if they were a work horse or some other type animal. I understand your frustrations. If they were happy in their work, would they leave? Have you ever quit a job because of frustrations? Working with someone is a two way street, is my point.

Well, you are right, that is a snarky comment but it is how it feels. In the time before we were able to manage with a home grown crew, the hard work would finish up about Thanksgiving. Of course, the men working for us had families and had to have income and we paid them full wages all winter, giving them vacations, health insurance, houseing, utilities, etc. All reasonable for employess, I agree. Come the middle of March, someone the other side of town, etc., would hire them away for a few dollars a month more. So we had kept them going all winter for very little advantage to the business and then had no help when we needed it. Frankly, I am glad those days are over. The people who work here now are all interested in the sucess of the whole business.

Yes bonnie, homegrown help is often the best. And I agree, it's difficult when it seems like you've gone out of your way just to have them quit at a bad time when the work is just beginning. But what are you going to do? Didn't mean to be so cranky. Just struck me wrong at the time. Maybe the neighbors should be talked too?
