Walking the two-year old heifers home to calve them. They should be starting by the 10th of February but there is always a few early ones so I brought them home now. It also lets them get used to the conditions around the houses, a lot more civilization than they are used to, before they start calving. Taken 1/29/2007.
Sorry, Sam. You really can't get good help any more. No-one makes a commitment. I see it all the time around Missoula. The cashiers at Target look like the crowd at the Star Wars bar . What happened to American work ethic? I wouldn't dream of missing work unless I was deathly ill, but at my prior job, we had several young employees that called in "sick" at least once or twice a week. Different times, these we live in. I'm 50 and have worked steady since age 15 (not counting two paper routes.) Makes me feel old to say this, but kids aren't the saem any more.
Of course, you might have had a good hand that really did just get a better offer.
Good luck. I hope you make it through calving season. I know it's a bear. One of my good friends has a ranch in Arlee. I've been around him at calving season and he's usually not in a good way. Compound that with colon cancer and he's in a tough way. I guess it can always be worse, eh?
