This seems like such a wimpy way to deal with a personal issue. Apology hot line offers solace to troubled callers. I have discovered in my life that making an apology is hard, I will agree, but it is the right thing to do and more people need to get into the habit of doing it. We are not always right, even though we wish we were, and to admit these foibles only strengthens us in the long run. But to do it anonymously shows a weakness in a person soul and I don't see how it does them any good. Admittedly a person might no longer be with us to apologize too, but that is a tragedy we as human beings will have to bear with us for the rest of our lives and should make us more aware of our actions and how they hurt people.
The only correct actions are those that demand no explanation and no apology. Red Auerbach

Murders
I sure would like to know what is going on around Hardin and the Crow Reservation? I see in the paper this morning that a High school kid was stabbed at a party on the Crow Reservation. Earlier this year in Febuary a man was beaten to death by Native Americans in Hardin. At Thanksgiving time last year 2 women were found beaten to death on the Crow Reservation. All of these incidents involve Native Americans from the Crow Reservation. It sure appears that there is an upswing in violence on the Crow Reservation in the past few years. Now I am sure there are people out there that would blame all the problems on the "evil Republicans," but political rhetoric aside, it really would be interesting to know what this violence is all about.

New Pictures
David had to remind me again about taking pictures. I truly never think about taking pictures so I never carry my camera along with me. It used to be cameras were big and bulky and you couldn't but with the new digital cameras they are getting small enough to pack around in your pocket and since I had to move more cattle today, I took it. Thought I would start out with a picture of my minuscule horse cavvy. Good horses, like a good woman, are really hard to find. This might explain why the cavvy is so small, I am very particular. I found the good woman and plan on keeping her but am always on the lookout for more horseflesh. Hopefully I can find another good horse soon. The horse numbers are getting really low.
I wanted to move a few cows, actually around 100 head, to a new pasture. Normally I don't do it this way but with the dry weather I wanted to get some cows off the water in the Chimney Rock pasture and on to some different water. We had to gather, then trail them to a corner so we could mother them up before we kicked them out. You know the old saying that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, well cattle really take that to heart and if we didn't stop them, and mother them up, the cows would go through the gate and plum forget they have a calf and we would have a big wreck. The calves would go back to the other end of the pasture to look for their mama's and the mama's would not know where they were. Believe me it would be a wreck if we didn't mother them up. We brought a few to make sure we had enough and the few that were left were not real happy with us.
I mentioned that I had to buy hay this year. Here is the reason why. Pretty sad excuse for an alfalfa field but that's what lack of rain does. I have no irrigation so if it don't fall from the sky, I have no options. Normally this stuff would be almost 2 feet tall, bushy and thick, and you would not be able to see the ground. This is what the drought is doing to me. All my crops and grass are withering up and dying.
To end on a good note though, the buyer met my price. $1.20/pound for the steers weighing 525 pounds. We agreed to $1.13/pound for the heifers at 485 pounds. The banker, who is really plugged into the markets, said that is the absolute top of the market right now so I must have done pretty good. Now the only worry is if I have enough grass to get them to 525 pounds. Always something to worry about.

Fed Ex
The battle with fed-ex has begun again. I was expecting a package and checked the tracking today and they say they "cannot locate the recipient." I spent 1 hour on the phone getting the run araound and I don't know if it did any good. To vent my frustration I sent the following e-mail to Fed-Ex. My Darling Wife thinks I might have went a little overboard with this e-mail. I think I kept it very polite. Let me know what you think.
Fed-Ex
Why do you people have such a hard time finding me? My address is very plainly written on the package and even the UPS driver, who has the intelligence of a rock, can find me and your stupid driver can't. My wife recently had a package that was supposed to be delivered to her (tracking number XXXXXXXXXXXXXX) and we were supposedly unfindable and they eventually mailed it to her. I would much prefer that method of delivery but when you buy products online they ship it the way they want not the way I might want it. What can I do to make it easier for you people? Move into town is not an option as I live and work on a 20,000 acre ranch. If I run my ranch like you run your buisness I would be broke. Glad I am smarter than you guys. My Address:

I see the public favors a ban on open containers in Montana, will the legislature listen? I don't know, the quote from Jim Shockley is telling.

Moving Cattle
We moved some more cattle to the high country yesterday. The steer calves were still walking pretty tender after branding but they made it up there. It isn't a real long trip. To make it to the water hole we only had to drive them 6 miles or so. I need to get some water ready in another pasture so I can scatter a few more cows out. Normally I don't do it this way but the dry weather has me doing lots of things I am not used to doing.
Priced the steer calves at $1.20/pound weighing 525 pounds. The buyer came back with $1.20/pound at 500 pounds. Told him no dice, 525 pounds is where I will price them. I might have priced them a little too low but you have to decide on a price and see where it leads. We'll see what happens but I bet he meets the price.

Letter
I heard something this morning on the radio and wanted to e-mail the person and chat with them about what they said. I went to there website and lo and behold every time I try to e-mail them it gets kicked back at me. Guess they don't want to hear from there loyal listeners. I printed it here and maybe he will stumble across it someday.
Dear John Pulasky
I heard your weather forecast this morning via NBS and would like to take exception
with some things you said. You made a statement something along the lines
that people were recovering from the latest incredible spring soaker around the state. WHAT SPRING SOAKER!! Admittedly we got more moisture than we have gotten since Christmas when we got 2/10 of an inch of moisture. In one fell swoop it doubled the amount of moisture we have seen since Jan 1 but to call 2/10 of
an inch a spring soaker is a bit of a stretch. You than said another spring
soaker was on its way. This goes with the first part in that I have yet to
see the first one. I understand that it is hard to forecast for the whole
state in the little time frame you have but to say the whole state had a
spring soaker when some areas are missed gets a little upsetting. Thank you
for listening to my rant.

Injury
Reading this article really makes me wonder. What would my personality have been like if I hadn't been knocked totally unconcious 4 times in various accidents while I was growing up? Or did it affect me at all? They talk about seeing a doctor but only one of the times, when there were pickup tire tracks across my forehead, did I see a doctor for these minor mishaps. Hmm, I guess I will never know how I was affected, or do we? My Darling Wife says it explains a lot.

Power
The enviromentilists have been on the global warming bandwagon for a long time and are doing every thing they can to stifle progress in their zeal to cut CO2 emmissions. I have always had a question for them. Why if you are so worried about CO2 emmissions do you so oppose the one form of power generation that produces no CO2, nuclear power? Well I now see that even some enviromentilists are beginning to think along the same lines. Don't get me wrong there are problems with nuclear power to but the question comes in which problem do you want to deal with? If CO2 is so evil then nuclear power is the only way to go. Pretty tough choice for the poor enviromentilists, isn't it.

RAIN UPDATE: Over the whole weekend we received just under 2/10 of an inch of rain. I will not complian about the moisture but it would sure be nice to get enough to do some good. This little bit will wash the dust off the grass is about all.

Gay Marriage
Is this why people wanted same sex unions? I thought it was so gay couples could bond in a union that was previously denied to them. This makes it sound like the only reason they got married was for the extra money they could sue the doctors for. Not a very good plug for the cause of same sex marriage.
RAIN UPDATE: Got around 1/10 of an inch. Not enough to do any good but hopefully will receive more.

Branding II
Just a quick note. We got them done and nobody got hurt. That's something that is real important to me. Safety of all involved. Had a hell of a good crew and we were done by 11:30 AM. There was one gal there that I hadn't seen in 25 years. Nice to see your neighbors and have a good time with them.
BAD NEWS. STILL HAVEN'T SEEN ANY RAIN. There's a 70% chance tonight. Hope we get some.
With liberty and pleasant weather, the simplest occupation, any unquestioned country mode of life which detains us in the open air, is alluring. The man who picks peas steadily for a living is more than respectable, he is even envied by his shop-worn neighbors. We are as happy as the birds when our Good Genius permits us to pursue any outdoor work, without a sense of dissipation. Henry David Thoreau

Branding
Well, I'm branding my big bunch today. We'll have to leave the house here at 3:45 AM to get to where we need to be by daylight. Neighbors will all be over to help plus I hired a few more wrestlers. If everybody shows that says they are, I should have a hell of a good crew. My Darling Wife complains when I have this big of crew since she has to cook and haul over more food to feed them. I say it's cheap payment for the work they do for us. Worried all day yesterday about getting everything ready for branding but it's close to show time now. No worring left. Lot's of work.

I will have to see it to believe it, but if this is true it wouyld be great. Trying to buy clothes for a young girl is immpossible unless you are willing to have them parade around half naked. My Darling Wife calls it the HIT (Hooker in Training) look.

Hay
Lots of different items of interest today. First thing that caught my eye was the article on the drought in the Gazette. It's one of those things that I don't need to read articles about the drought since I am dealing with it on a daily basis, but I can't stop myself. It's kind of like a horse running back into a burning barn, I know I shouldn't read them but I can't help myself.
Next I note this article in the Washington Post that deals with the wonderful effecincy of our Federal Government. There is a old saying about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, well in this situation it more sounds like the right hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. The USDA sets a rule up on importing ground beef from Canada and then turns around and ignores it and allows the meat to flow since the big packers want it. Really shows a person who runs the USDA, big buisness at the expense of the consumer.
Just a couple of different things that caught my eye this morning. Things here on the ranch continue as dry. Got the bull to the sale yesterday but didn't watch him sell. The check will come in the mail in a few days. Did get the fences fixed that he tore up though. That fencing is a never ending chore.
Mentioning fencing reminds me of a story I have to tell. My Darling Wife has friends on the Internet that are scattered all over North America that don't know anything about ranching. One day, while visiting with these friends, she mentioned that I had sent the hired man out to do some fencing. One lady, in all seriousness, asked why we were sending this guy out to sell stolen goods and where he was selling them at. My Darling Wife told me this and I thought I was going to fall down I was laughing so hard. She got the whole situation straightened out and they laugh about it to this day.
The only other thing of interest is I got my hay bought for next year. 600 tons on a handshake aggrement. I know my word is good and the guy I bought it from has a good reputation so the handshake should be enough. Buying hay in May, since I know I am not going to harvest any of my own, is just unbelieveable to me. $85 a ton laid in to the ranch is a lot of money to spend for feed but I believe the price is only going to go up so contract it early and get it done. Why pay down debt when you can just add more. Keeps life interesting.

Wandering Bull
Bulls on a ranch can be a pain in the ass. Monday evening I got a call from one of my neighbors that they had found a bull of ours with thier cows and had drove it home and put it in my good corral. So yesterday mornig I was going to bring the bull home and keep it here until I had a chance to take it to market. Well I got to the corral and discovered he had tore two corral fences down and was gone again. I called the neighbor and let them know he was loose again and to watch out for him. Well they called last night and said they had him again and he was in thier corral so I went over and got him and he is standing in my stock trailer right now and shortly he will be on his way to market.
Couple of interesting things about this story. This bull traveled 8 miles to get to the neighbors cattle, not once but twice and when the neighbors brought him to my corral they trailed him that 8 miles to get there. He is one traveling fool. The reason I want to sell this bull is now that he has been with the neighbors cows I don't know if he has any sexually transmitted diseases or not so he is not safe to put with my cows and if he crawls/jumps fences like this I can't be sure he will stay with my cows and not go visit the cows over the fence. Seems like every year I get a bull that gets this way and I am forced to git rid of him. Like I said, bulls are a pain in the ass.
