I hate spiders, but this one didn't bother me as much as usual. Maybe because it was so big. With legs it is a little bigger than the palm of my hand. Still a pretty scary creature, and the biggest spider I have ever seen out here. Taken 7/19/2006.
An amateur's guest is that you saw the largest North American wolf spider species, Hogna carolinensis, which has a body that is at least an inch long and legs that could span the palm of your hand. The Carolina Wolf Spider is found in habitats ranging from desert scrub to woodlands across much of North America including Montana. It borrows but leaves a turret of leaves and silk extending above the whole. They live for about three years, according to what I could gather on line.
Looks like that thing could feed on small household pets!
