They can travel more comfortably when they're not all crowded together. They're walking along in a natural relaxed manner, not "driven".

Nice image, and it looks like you were on a horse taking this photo, if the ears at the bottom belonged to one. I can just imagine you saying,"Hold 'er steady now, while I shoot."
