Black Cattle



One of the Two-year old heifers with it's baby calf. It's RED baby calf. Where the h**l the red color came from is beyond me. The cows will throw an occasional red calf but I have never had it on a black two-year old before with the bulls I use. I have to admit he is a cule little devil though. Taken 3/10/2006.

He sure is a cutie. If I remember correctly from college genetics this red calf means that both the bull and the heifer carry the recessive gene creating the red calf. If you really want to know more let me know.

We get those red surprises every now and then too. You would think that with a registered herd and the red-carrying sires in the Holstein breed so well known, they wouldn't show up unexpectedly, but they do. Never been a heifer though, always bulls. sigh....
